Writing Academic Essays

Academic essays serve as an important mode of assessment for professors and lecturers to evaluate whether their students have learned the concepts and theories they have been teaching in their course. Academic essays will reflect the students abilities in terms of writing, doing research, formulating and giving support for arguments and analyzing text with respect to certain parameters or standards. The marks that students will get from academic essays will be part of the final grade that they will get for a subject. Hence, submitting well-written academic essays is crucial. To this end, below are tips that students can follow in writing academic essays:

* Examine the topic. If the professor or lecturer has already provided a topic for you to write about, all you have to do is just do research on it and gather relevant background materials. However, if your professor gave you the liberty to choose a topic from within a given subject, choose one that is both relevant and interesting and has enough of reference materials to support your essay.

* Formulate a thesis statement. A thesis statement stating what the writer intends to prove in the essay. This is given as part of the introduction. The whole essay will revolve around proving or giving evidence to the points raised in connection with the thesis statement.

* Write an essay outline. An outline will guide you in completing the essay. This is an organized list of important points to be covered in the essay under the heading of the parts that make up the entire essay. Take note that each part of the essay has the appropriate content that needs to be written. Writing an outline will make sure that this is achieved as well as allow you to have an easier time in doing research and writing the essay because you already have a rough plan of what needs to be done at a certain point in the essay writing process.
